Please take some time to browse through my Web site. There is a wealth of information for parents on the "Suggested Readings" page - found under "more..." Parents can also find a page of helpful links to local and national organizations that support gifted learners. There are helpful links for students, too! This is where I'll post links for all of the online sources we'll use in GT this year.
So, what is GT like, anyway? To start, our classes will meet for a total of 150 minutes per week. Each class will meet for two hours on either Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday of each week. And then there are Fun Fridays! Each Friday, our classes will meet for their remaining half hour. To start our Fun Fridays off, I will teach students how to play chess. After we've learned all the chess basics, students will have several options from which to choose.
Next week, students will vote to decide how we'll spend our mid-week time together this first quarter. During the second quarter, we will apply what we learn the first quarter to make a real difference by entering the Siemens "We Can Change the World" Challenge. The second half of the year will shift slightly as students study careers that interest them and develop science fair projects aligned with the careers they like - and aligned with the deadlines for our school science fair. Students will consult with virtual mentors for input, too.
We will hold a fall GT information meeting for parents on Monday, October 21 to coincide with conferences, but please don't hesitate to contact me before then if you have any questions or concerns. I look forward to a fabulous year!
