Gwendolynn Millen Combs
I love teaching at Don Roberts Elementary, and gifted kids are my passion! I hold a Masters degree in Gifted Education, and my specialties are parent involvement and curriculum development – especially curriculum involving Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). I am an active member of the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC), served 3 years on their Parent Advisory Committee, and have had sessions accepted for presentation at their national conference every year since 2005. I am also an active member of and presenter to Arkansans for Gifted and Talented Eduction (AGATE). On top of that, there is one gifted teen who calls me “Mom”.
In addition to teaching GT, I have also taught high school English, so I’m pretty picky about grammar and spelling. (I have to admit, though, that I’m much like Tigger in that I LOOOVE to make up my own words.) I came to Don Roberts its inaugural year after teaching GT seminar at Dunbar. Before that, I worked at the UALR Center for Gifted Education, coordinating SLUFY, Blueprints for Biography, and Duke TIP.
My family consists of my husband Michael, my son Phoenix, and myself. Our pets are two dogs named Dylan and Woody, and a rabbit named Cadbury.
My favorite hobbies include hiking, camping, backpacking, cooking, and photography. Of course, I love to travel. I'm a vegetarian, a tree hugger, and a foodie. Sea glass fascinates me, and I enjoy making jewelry from the beautiful pieces I have collected. I love to read non-fiction books when I have time, and I always enjoy a good board game.
I grew up in Oxford, Ohio, but I also lived in New Mexico and California (only for 3 days!) before the US Air Force took me to Texas, Mississippi, and Japan, where I spent five years. I moved from there to Arkansas in 2001.
I hope you find this Web site helpful and fun. Please don’t hesitate to contact me.
